In 2011, this goal was expanded to 12,000 MW by 2020. Included in it is the Million Solar Roof Initiative.
#Million solar roofs install
Governor Schwarzenegger, who campaigned on a pledge to create a major solar program, signed the bill Monday. The California Solar Initiative is a 2006 initiative to install 3,000 MW of additional solar power by 2016. CALSSA is joining with our allies to once again call for market transformational policies aimed at bringing solar-charged batteries to scale, much the same way we did with solar. After a long roller-coaster ride in the California legislature, the Million Solar Roofs Bill, SB1, is now law. In 2006, then-Governor Schwarzenegger signed the Million Solar Roofs Initiative into law, which set a goal of building one million solar energy systems on homes. Our white paper highlights just how effective the Million Solar Roofs Initiative was in bringing solar technologies to scale and creating jobs and clean air at the same time. Now, with more than 300,000 solar roof installations, the buzz is getting louder. Home and commercial or government facility systems must be located on or adja- cent to the buildings. The Million Solar Roofs Initiative Here’s What Counts Since its announcement in June 1997, the Million Solar Roofs Initiative has generated a major buzz in communities, cities, and states throughout the nation. The Million Solar Roofs Initiative was the catalyst for California's solar market and after 13 years, we reached this milestone in 2019. On Decemwe celebrated this milestone with former Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown along with a host of other policy makers, consumers, and solar allies in Clovis, CA at a high school that has a solar and storage system as well as a clean energy academy, educating the next generation of solar installers and designers. The Million Solar Roofs Initiative includes photovoltaics that produce electricity from sunlight and solar thermal panels that produce heat for domestic hot water, space heating, or swimming pools. This paper presents an overview of the development of the initiative and significant activities to date.

In 2006, California made international news by passing the Million Solar Roofs Initiative (SB 1- Murray) and setting a goal of building a million solar energy systems across the state through the adoption of long-term rebates, net metering, and the beginnings of incorporating solar into new homes. The Million Solar Roofs Initiative, announced by the President in June of 1997, spans a period of twelve years and intends to increase domestic deployment of solar technologies.
